Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability
The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
