Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
